Lions Day with the United Nations

March 4th, 2017

IMG_1686 IMG_1763 IMG_1695

On Saturday, March 4, 2017, the Lions Clubs International hosted their 39th Annual Lions Day with the United Nations bringing in lions from different parts of the world, UN diplomats and key note speakers. Members of the Toronto Trillium Lions Club were part of the 850 participants that came together to discover how the UN and Lions can work together to help those in need on a global scale.

This year’s theme was on Health and Inclusion. The morning was full of inspiring speeches as we heard from Madame Lakshmi Puri, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations & Deputy Executive Director of UN Women on Gender Equality and Dr. Timothy Shriver, Chairman of the Special Olympics. There was also a Refugee panel discussion where members shared their personal stories on how they were impacted or helped refugees in their country.

Our club had the opportunity to join a guided tour of the UN Headquarters. We learned about the history and structure of the organization and we also learned about the work and mandate of the different UN organs. We also talked about the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and as Lions we are committed to support the goals of ending poverty, protecting the planet and preserving peace and prosperity. We also visited the four chambers where official meetings take place:

* the General Assembly Hall

* the Security Council Chamber

* the Trusteeship Council Chamber

* the Economic and Social Council Chamber

This year was the first time the Lions Day conference was held in the General Assembly Hall, this is where all 193 Members convene to discuss global issues. It was such an honour to sit in one of those seats.

Overall, this conference was a memorable experience that many of us will never forget!
